HEALTH POLICY & MANAGEMENT FELLOWSHIP

Begin your post-master’s career in Health Care Administration with Hoag in Orange County, California. The Hoag Hospital system is quickly becoming one the most recognizable names in clinical integration, innovation, superior outcomes, and high value healthcare. These unique one-year fellowships include rotations across two campuses, Hoag Hospital (Newport Beach) and Hoag Orthopedic Institute (Irvine), giving fellows exposure to both a large community - based hospital and a joint venture physician/hospital-owned specialty hospital. In this value-based program, administrative fellows work alongside surgical fellows and rotate with executive and physician leaders from both campuses to promote superior patient outcomes and the highest quality care. Fellows will also have the opportunity to lead projects, make presentations, attend educational sessions and engage in healthcare advocacy by meeting with elected officials. Graduates of this program will be positioned to serve as leaders and change agents for healthcare.

The fellowship program has been designed to provide:

  • A knowledge of healthcare dynamics, gained from working with administrative and physician leaders at various levels of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute and Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach;
  • An opportunity for fellows to obtain an applied foundation in healthcare economics that combine patient outcome measurements, cost analysis, pricing bundles, system integration, and shared leadership;
  • An appreciation for the common values shared by all health care professionals at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute and Hoag Hospital;
  • A progressive experience with the goal of preparing administrative fellows for a leadership career founded on the ethos of high value healthcare principles; and
  • A unique side-by-side experience with Orthopedic Surgical Fellows to establish a strong understanding of and appreciation for the concept of collaboration/partnership.

ROTATIONS

The fellowship is a structured one-year program comprised of seven core rotations. The program begins on August 1st each year, in alliance with the surgical fellowship programs. Project-based in nature, the fellow and the designated preceptor determine the appropriate project portfolio that ensures an engaging learning environment and the ability to translate academic theory into practice.

Core rotations include:

  • Strategic Analytics & Business Development
  • Performance Improvement & Clinical Outcomes
  • Finance & Accounting
  • Institute Operations & ASC's
  • Talent Acquisition & Physician Recruitment
  • Planning, Strategy, & New Ventures
  • Marketing, Corporate Communications, & Patient Experience

During each rotation, fellows participate in fundamental projects that support ongoing departmental initiatives and develop core competencies. The responsibilities and assignments are primarily project oriented. The fellows are exposed to senior-level decision-making processes and participate in team decision making to learn about the interdependent nature of hospital departments. With guidance from mentors, fellows are also encouraged to seek exposure to activities outside of their core rotations. A broad network of individuals also provides continuous support to the fellows.

During each rotation, the fellow will be assigned a senior level preceptor who provides feedback and direction for assigned projects. In addition, the fellowship mentors are readily available to assist in the fellows’ professional development throughout the duration of the program.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In conjunction with their rotations, fellows have the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills by:

  • Participating in a structured mentorship program
  • Attending institutional leadership committees
  • Holding informational meetings with key executives
  • Attending industry conference(s)

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The fellowship requires a capstone project in value-based medicine. Fellows are expected to submit abstracts of their projects to major industry meetings and journals. A completed manuscript ready for submission for publication is expected by the end of the fellowship year. Fellows will present their research to the community at a symposium held by Hoag Orthopedics.

SALARY, VACATION, AND TRAVEL

Fellows are paid at the PGY-6 level including the following benefits: 401K matching program, immediate health coverage for employee and family, paid sick time, and two weeks of paid vacation.
